catalogue #61 in The Edmonton Art Gallery: Illingworth Kerr Retrospective, 1985, exhibition label verso; 'At first sight, 'Ranch South of Priddis' appears out of focus because of such tonal harmonies. The scene is a peaceful farm set against a dramatic backdrop of mountains. The whole painting is rendered in purples and yellows, an extraordinary combination of colours for a landscape but it works, and likely because of these colours it is a picture that stays with you. Kerr has been called an habitual painter with purple. He uses it both as a neutral, preferring it to grey and brown, and as a descriptive colour.
